What’s really in your dog and cat food?
What would you find if you took the time to read the ingredient label of your dog and cat food? Does what you read match the picture on the package? It may have photos of fruits, vegetables, maybe a chicken. Still not sure if what you see and what you read match?
Recently we’ve heard a lot of concern from customers regarding “mass market brand” pet foods. After a glut of advertising from some brands that tout healthy ingredients and news questioning the quality of some nutrition, a lot of consumers are getting mixed signals about what we are really feeding your pets.
Here’s a copy of an ingredient label from a popular mass market brand dog food that has vegetables, grains and meat on the front of the bag.
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols, salmon, rice flour, soy flour, meat and bone meal, propylene glycol, sugar, tricalcium phosphate, animal digest, salt, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, sorbic acid (a preservative), dried sweet potatoes, dried green beans, dried carrots, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, mono and dicalcium phosphate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, Red 40, Vitamin A supplement, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, copper sulfate, Vitamin B-12 supplement, Blue 2, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.
Who knew? Does the contrast to what you are shown Vs what you are told cause you feel mislead? Artificial flavoring and colors, soy, meat and bone meal, over time these ingredients can have long term health effects on your pet. If you’re concerned about what is in your pets’ food, we encourage you to visit us at Mighty Pet. It is our mission to help you find the best for you and your pet. Actually it is our job.
