Pet Nutrition – Quality Over Quantity

Sure, owning and caring for your four-legged friend comes with some uncertainty and loads of questions. Finding the time for your furry friend is a big commitment. Plus, what types of treats, bones, and food are right for your pet?! Don’t stress! At Mighty Pet, we’re here for you and happy to help answer all your questions! As you know, we’ve already covered the topic of picking the right bones for your pooch, but what about pet nutrition?! This month’s blog is about exactly that… adequate pet nutrition! And if there’s one great rule of thumb (or paw for that matter) to remember, it’s QUALITY over QUANTITY!

If you’ve ever looked at the nutrition label on your bag of your dog food, you’d notice there are loads of confusing nutritional facts in addition to recommended daily feeding amounts, and more. We’ve made this easy for you to understand!

Not all Dog Food is Created Equal

Sure, so you’ve got a budget to work with and not all dog food is created equal. The higher quality the dog food, the more costly it gets. We at Mighty Pet often hear that people can’t afford high-quality kibble. But here’s the scoop! When you feed your pet high-quality food you can often decrease the quantity of food you feed them, in the long run saving money, and your furry friend will be even healthier!

If you were to purchase a lesser-quality dog kibble, you might end up having to feed your pooch twice, if not 3 times as much of lower quality kibble to equal the nutritional value from that of higher-quality kibble. Therefore, by providing a healthier, higher-quality kibble, you would end up purchasing food less often and could see a decrease in skin problems and other common health issues. Your dog will also poop less and have less smelly poop, that’s a win in itself!

The Proof is in the Protein!

Now that you know that feeding your pet higher quality kibble equates to needing a lesser quantity, saves you money, and it keeps your dog even healthier, you may be wondering what a “quality” dog food really looks like. Again, as a rule of thumb, you can resort back to Quality vs. Quantity! When determining what high-quality pet food to purchase, it’s important to note that foods containing meat first and that avoid artificial preservatives and fillers provide a higher nutrient value and greater digestibility. This results in less food consumed, more nutrients absorbed, and less pet waste produced leading to an overall lower “cost to feed.”

There are two key factors that affect the purchase price of pet foods:

  1. The QUANTITY of meat they contain
  2. The QUALITY of the meat and other ingredients

Lower quality, less natural pet foods may appear to be cheaper, but the real cost may be higher than you think. When evaluating pet foods, you should consider the “cost to feed” rather than the “cost per volume”. This is a more accurate reflection of the true price point of pet foods.
